Most of the technology we currently use makes use of artificial intelligence to varying degrees. Many of the tools provide great opportunities for language learning and practice.

 

ChatGPT:

ChatGPT provides a range of activities which can take the form of a casual conversation, a role-play, or various types of exercises to practice particular lexical or grammatical concepts. ChatGPT is free and allows users to have text-based or voice-based conversations (voice conversations are only available on the mobile apps for iOS and Android.)

Below is a list of suggestions to get started with: 

Note: you can specify a proficiency level such as A1, A2, B1, B2, etc.

  • Act as [who] and ask me questions about [what]

  • Imagine you’re [who] in [what situation]. Ask me [what to do or talk about]. Then give me feedback on how well I did and how I could improve.

  • Act as an interviewer and ask me the interview questions for the [position]. Ask me a question and wait for my answer. Then ask another question. End the interview when I say ‘thank you for your time’. Provide feedback on how I performed.

  • Help me practice my [speaking/listening/reading/writing] skills in [target language] by engaging in a role-play scenario.

  • I want you to act as a language exchange partner and engage in a role-play scenario with me in [target language].

Prompts for Practice Conversations:

Practicing conversation in a target language can help improve both speaking and listening skills. Here are some prompts for practice conversations:

  • Give me questions to ask in [target language] to practice [speaking/listening] skills.

  • Help me practice my [speaking/listening] skills in [target language] by having a conversation about [topic].

  • I want you to act as a language partner and ask me questions in [target language] about [topic].

  • Can you give me some example questions and answers for a job interview in [target language]?

  • Can we engage in a conversation about [topic] in [target language] to help me practice my language skills?

  • Pretend you are a high school student from [target country]. I will ask you a series of questions in [target language], and I’d like you to respond as if you were human.

  • Let’s pretend you are a tour company in [target country] called [name of company]. I will pretend to be a tourist. I will ask you a series of questions in [target language], and I’d like you to respond as if you were human. 

  •  Let’s pretend you are at a restaurant in [city] called [name]. I will pretend to be someone who went to the restaurant but got food poisoning. I will ask you a series of questions in [target language].

  • We will do a role-playing game: You’ll be my next-door neighbor, [insert name]. I will be myself. You will speak to me in [target language].

  • We’ll act as if you were my classmate, [name]. We will have interaction in [target language].

  • We’re going to role-play as classmates. Your name is [name], and you’re originally from [target country]. We are going to speak to each other in [target language].
