Student Academic Resources (SAR) is seeking to hire students to support other students in their academic pursuits.

SAR coordinates programs for intellectual enrichment and academic support with the goal of fostering a community culture that recognizes the relationship between intellectual growth and personal development. The office strives to share information with the campus community, in order to increase awareness and use of appropriate services, with the goal of facilitating academic achievement for all students.

SAR Peer Support Positions include Academic Peer Advisors, Office Assistants, Graduate Interns, and NSO Peer Advisors. The Peer Support Positions work as a team, collaborating with other campus departments, in order to enhance student access to resources and supports at Wesleyan.

Academic Peer Advisor (APA)

Academic Peer Advisors are returning students who work during New Student Orientation (NSO), which includes International Student Orientation and First Things First, and throughout the academic year, to provide a well-informed and confidential support to students regarding matters related to the course registration process, student systems (such as WesPortal and Moodle), campus resources, metacognitive learning strategies, and academic skills (such as time management and exam preparation). APAs work under SAR, with other Peer Academic Supports, in order to enhance student access to academic resources for students.

  • Requirements and Expectations

    Requirements

    • Sensitive and responsible when privy to confidential information; applicants must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, while managing multiple projects
    • Skilled at providing patient instruction and an aptitude for recognizing subtle cues which may indicate the need for additional support, and the capacity to considerately make the appropriate referral
    • Currently enrolled, continuing enrollment next semester, and in good academic standing
    • Available to any student regardless of work study eligibility

    Schedule / Work Commitment Expectations

    • Participation in a welcome event in spring, as well as on campus trainings in May and August
    • Attendance at scheduled team meetings in the summer, weekly team meetings while classes are in session, as well as residential life meetings in assigned areas periodically
    • From June through August responding to email and other communications with new students
    • Availability throughout all NSO until the start of classes
    • The academic year’s work schedule is determined each semester, based on students’ availability as a team; each Peer Advisor is expected to work 4 - 6 hours per week when classes are in session
  • Duties and Responsibilities
    • Participation in all SAR Peer Support trainings, meetings, and programs
    • Support new students with schedule planning and preparation, as well as answer their general questions, via email during summer
    • Meet with students during NSO to serve as a resource regarding matters related to faculty advising meetings, course registration and drop/add, WesMaps, and academic support, especially Student Academic Resources
    • Oversee NSO Peer Advisors throughout NSO, and provide support for other NSO activities, including assisting with Arrival Day, Common Moment, and other activities as needed
    • Act as a referral source throughout the academic year in order to enhance student access to campus supports and resources by providing individual support for students, as well as working with RAs in the residence halls to provide programming for residents
    • Outreach and maintain regular communication with referred students throughout the year
    • Prepare, create materials for, and facilitate academic support meetings (individual and group) focused on metacognitive learning strategies, time management and organization, and academic skills such as note taking, studying, and exam preparation strategies
    • Provide outreach to the campus community regarding supports, resources, and workshops available, including communication with faculty, ResLife and other Student Affairs staff
    • Represent Student Academic Resources at various campus events and programs
    • Track and report on sessions and workshops, regularly monitor correspondence to the peer advisor email, and other basic administrative duties as needed
  • Qualifications

    General Qualifications

    • Established record of leadership, maturity, and academic excellence
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively and persuasively with diverse individuals and groups
    • Reliable to complete tasks and provide follow up as needed
    • Demonstrated high attention to detail and strong organizational skills
    • Energetic and effective presentation skills
    • Familiarity with the supports, resources, and services available at Wesleyan, including peer programs, and especially Student Academic Resources
    • Maintain a GPA of 3.2/4.0

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Deep knowledge of Wesleyan University, including the processes and policies related to course registration and how to navigate academic departments and resources
    • Creative problem solving, resourcefulness, and a growth mindset approach to challenges
    • Prior experience in a peer support role
    • Proficient in the use of G-Suite and organizing/hosting virtual and in-person meetings
    • Interest and aptitude in learning new technology
    • Knowledge of SAR programs including tutoring and Accessibility Services

New Student Orientation (NSO) Peer Advisor

NSO Peer Advisors are returning students who work during New Student Orientation (NSO), which includes International Student Orientation and First Things First, to assist incoming students with schedule planning and preparation for faculty advisor meetings, and provide support for other NSO activities. NSO Peer Advisors work under SAR, with other Peer Academic Supports, in order to enrich the NSO experience for students.
