Training and Education
In 2013, the university affirmed that in order to comply with state and federal law. Beginning in fall 2015, all staff and faculty members are required to attend a Title VII-Title IX training related to understanding and preventing harassment; this training is directly connected to Wesleyan’s Policy Prohibiting Discriminatory Harassment and Sexual Misconduct .
This is a one-time, in-person training that has since has been incorporated into orientation for new faculty and new grad students. That said, this does not include new staff and we also recognize that not everyone can attend those orientations. With that, each year we offer additional sessions through Success at Wes.
Additionally, ALL EMPLOYEES are required to complete the TimesUp Training and those directly responsible for and connected to cases of sexual misconduct are required to attend various training throughout the year.
Lastly, in May 2020 the U.S. Department of Education announced updates to regulations around campus-based sexual misconduct. Definitions and processes have changed under these new federal regulations including modifications to complaint resolution processes for faculty, staff, and students and a revision of support services and resources. We worked very closely with Phil Catanzano as expert in this area to review and revise Wesleyan’s policies and procedures in accordance with the new regulations. On September 28, 2020, Mr. Catanzano also provided a foundation training; a broad overview of TIX at Wesleyan focusing on the new regulations and the aforementioned changes.
Participants in this training included:
- Title VII-IX Core Team
- Title IX Resource Network (including all the previous TIX committees of faculty, staff, and students as well as Middletown community members)
- Previous Hearing Panelists
- Class Deans
- Confidential Reporters (from ORSL, CAPS, Health Services, SHAPE, Ombuds)
- Athletics Administration / Leadership
- Faculty and Staff (Union) Reps
- Outside (contracted) investigator/adjudicator pool
