SHORT-TERM DISABILITY
1. Faculty: Faculty members who are at least half-time (0.5 FTE) will continue to be paid their regular salary for occasional absences because of illness or injury; faculty who are less than half-time (0.5 FTE) are not eligible for short-term disability. Eligible faculty members who are absent for six or more consecutive working days due to illness or injury should apply for short-term disability, which is subject to approval by Wesleyan's Short-Term Disability insurance provider. Please contact the Benefits Office in Human Resources for directions on how to file a claim. Due to faculty's unique teaching and semester-driven responsibilities, the faculty member will then be placed on unpaid leave. If the medical leave is approved by the insurance provider, salary will then be continued along with a retroactive payment to the date of disability. The length of short-term disability will be determined by Wesleyan's Short-Term Disability insurance provider, but can be no longer than six months.
2. Staff: Employees who work at least 0.75 FTE per year will continue to receive their normal salary for occasional absences because of non-work related illness or injury. Employees who work less than 0.75 FTE per year are not eligible for short-term disability. Eligible employees who are absent for six or more consecutive working days due to such an illness or injury should apply for short-term disability, which is subject to approval by Wesleyan's Short-Term Disability insurance provider. Please contact the Benefits Office in Human Resources for directions on how to file a claim. LONG-TERM DISABILITY
For a disability of longer than six months, eligible faculty and staff, as defined above, may receive coverage for additional benefits provided under the University’s long-term disability insurance program, which is administered by Wesleyan’s Long-Term disability insurance provider in coordination with Social Security. Employees approved for long-term disability will continue to receive long-term disability benefits as long as they are medically approved. Staff members'employment will end when their short-term disability expires. All employees on long-term disability will be eligible to participate in the group health insurance plan until age 65.
