In the Galleries: Massive Power Ball

11 a.m.–4 p.m., Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies, 343 Washington Terrace

    More on the exhibit

Massive Power Ball by Karen Xu ’22 is rooted in a close relationship to basketball. Growing up in China, Xu regularly played the game and watched broadcasts of the NBA. The past few years living in the U.S. have enabled Xu to gain a more complex understanding of her favorite pastime. In Massive Power Ball, Xu has created a character who may simultaneously be a surrogate for the artist, a basketball star, or the crowd of fans. Through animation and printmaking, Xu places that character in scenes that incorporate both communist propaganda and screenshots of basketball games. She inquires how basketball can be an arena for the clash and meditation of individual desire and collective force, extending the thrill of the game into her consideration of the dynamics of the China-U.S. relationship and Chinese Communist Party ideals. Xu’s playful criticality manifests in many different media including printmaking, collage, and video, embodying her basketball world of lighthearted fantasy within an uncompromising reality. This presentation marks the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition.

In the Galleries: fron/terra incognita + Hostile Terrain (HT94)

Noon–5 p.m., Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery, 283 Washington Terrace

    More on the exhibit

fron/terra incognita + Hostile Terrain (HT94) is an exhibition comprising a series of lectures, performances, readings, and art installations on the broad theme of borders, migration, displacement, and violence. Programming will provoke reflections on the territorial dimensions of borders and their consequential effects.

The exhibition is anchored by the Hostile Terrain (HT94) installation in the gallery. HT94 has been installed at many institutions both nationally and globally in 2021 and throughout 2022. The work of forensic anthropologist and MacArthur Fellow Jason de León (University of California, Los Angeles), HT94 is a visceral and visual documentation of migrant deaths along the United States / Mexico border. The exhibition is composed of over 3,200 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2019. The installation is created by Wesleyan student volunteers, who record identifying details of each person and then pin the toe tags to a map of the border region.

Co-curated by A. George Bajalia, Benjamin Chaffee, Rosemary Lennox,  Paula C. Park, María Ospina, and Anu Sharma.

WESeminar: Failure Is Not an Option: Evaluating Risk in Your Career

1–2 p.m., Room 114, Boger Hall More on the WESeminar

A common complaint about today’s young professionals is that they are terrified of failure. But fear can be seen as a rational, human response to the competition and uncertainty inherent in the modern job market. There is a problem with reacting to this fear by pursuing a safe, stable career path because there is no longer any safe, stable career path--it’s an illusion held over from a less turbulent time. It’s not about whether you will fail or succeed; ultimately, you will do both many times over the many decades of your adult life. What you do need to learn is how to evaluate risk: you need to understand the risks behind whatever course you consider while also recognizing that everything you consider will be inherently risky. In this session we will review different types of risk and how to maximize your chances of building a meaningful career.
Please check back for presenter details.

Presenter: Sharon Belden Castonguay is Executive Director of the Gordon Career Center (GCC) at Wesleyan. She joined the GCC in May 2013 from Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business, where she was the Director of the Graduate Career Management Center. She holds a doctorate in human development & psychology from Harvard.

Wesleyan Film Series Screening and Talkback: Fire and Love and zoom Q&A with director Sara Dosa ’05

8 p.m., Goldsmith Family Cinema, Jeanine Basinger Center for FILM Studies

    More on the film

Fire of Love tells the story of two French lovers, Katia and Maurice Krafft, who died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unraveling the mysteries of our planet, while simultaneously capturing the most explosive volcano imagery ever recorded. Along the way, they changed our understanding of the natural world, and saved tens of thousands of lives. Previously unseen hours of pristine 16-millimeter film and thousands of photographs reveal the birth of modern volcanology through an unlikely lens—the love of its two pioneers.

About the filmmaker: Sara Dosa (Director) is an Indie Spirit Award-nominated doc director and Peabody award-winning producer whose interests lay in telling unexpected character-driven stories about ecology, economy and community. Her first feature as a director, The Last Season, won a Golden Gate Award at its SFIFF 2014 premiere and was nominated for the Indie Spirit Truer Than Fiction Award. Dosa co-directed an Emmy-nominated episode of the Netflix music series Re-Mastered. Dosa’s third feature as a director, The Seer & The Unseen, premiered in 2019, winning awards at a number of festivals. As a producer, she produced the Peabody-winning Audrie & Daisy (2016 Sundance/Netflix Originals) and the Peabody- and Emmy-nominated Survivors (2018 IDFA/POV). Dosa co-produced the Academy Award-nominated The Edge of Democracy”(2019 Sundance/Netflix Originals) as well as An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (2017 Sundance / Paramount). In 2018, DOC NYC named Dosa to the inaugural “40 Under 40” class of documentary filmmakers and was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She graduated from Wesleyan University and holds a master’s in anthropology and international development economics from the London School of Economics.
