Dewati Rahmayani

Dewati Rahmayani is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at Wesleyan University. She is the delegation from the Royal Palace of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Dewati teaches Javanese dance, specifically Yogyakarta Classical Dance. She believes that Yogyakarta Classical Dance is a form of visualization of the noble values that exist in the lives of Javanese people. In addition, it is also a way for self-reflection and meditation. The Javanese philosophy of nyawiji, greget, sengguh, ora mingkuh is a guideline that she always holds to represent Yogyakarta Classical Dance. Nyawiji means focus on the goal, greget means have passion in everything we do, sengguh means self-confidence and ora mingkuh means never give up and not afraid to face challenges/difficulties.

Born in a Javanese environment made Dewati increasingly interested in studying Javanese values, especially Yogyakarta Classical Dance. She started learning Yogyakarta Classical Dance in 2009 by joining one of the dance group/community in Yogyakarta. From there, her interest in Javanese dance grew. In 2011, she had the opportunity to learn Javanese dance at the Royal Palace of Yogyakarta and was appointed as Abdi Dalem of the Royal Palace of Yogyakarta in 2018. Abdi dalem is the devoted caretaker of the Royal Palace in Java. The role of Abdi dalem is considered an honorable duty that is passed down through generations.
