Resource Center Programming
- First Things First (FTF)- a pre-orientation program that provides resources, support, and community for first-generation students to assist them in their transition into the Wesleyan environment.
- Orientation Diversity Receptions (SOC Reception, Pride Reception, FGLI Reception)- The Resource Center, in collaboration with the Office for Equity and Inclusion and Orientation, hosts three receptions before the school year begins to welcome new and returning underrepresented students on campus to meet and mingle.
- SOC BBQ / SOC Ice Cream Social- These two events, one in September and the other in April, provide a space for students of color at Wesleyan to reconnect and create community.
- Heritage/Awareness Months and Weeks (Latinx History Month, LGBTQ History Month, Native American History Month, Trans Day of Rememberance, Black History Month, Trans Day of Visibility, Asian American and Pacific Islander History Month, Refugee Week, Africa Week, Surviovor Solidarity Month)- The Resource Center collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to fund, create, and implement programming related to various heritage and awareness events.
- Towards Love and Care SOC Support Group (TLC Support Group)- This space was created by the Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality interns at the RC to provide a space for students of color to talk about their healing and self-care journeys.
- Anhksgiving- This yearly tradition was created by Arline Pierre Louis '19 in collaboration with The Resource Center to provide a space for students of color to express themselves through different cultural performances, foods, and vendors. Students also get to hear from a panel of graduating POC seniors reflecting upon their time at Wesleyan and giving advice to the upcoming generation.
- FGLI Appreciation Week- Built around National FGLI Day on November 8th, this week of events are organized by the RC Socioecomic Status and Disability Interns to celebrate and bring visibility to the FGLI community at Wesleyan.
- Environmental Justice Series- The Environmental Justice Series is a collaboration between The Resource Center Sustainability and Spirituality interns and the Office of Sustainability to bring conversations and speakers to campus that highlight social issues related to the intersections of power, privilege, oppression, sustainability, and the environment. Past speakers include Dr. Vandana Shiva, Mikaela Loach, and Greg Genco.
- MLK Commemoration Ceremony- At the start of every Spring semester, The Resource Center organizers a space for the community to come together as a community to honor the civil rights legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Past keynote speakers include Andratesha Fritzgerald, Ruby Sales, Bettina Love, Shakti Butler, and Bernice Johnson Reagon (MLK website).
- Pop-up Thrift Socials- Before Fall and Spring Break, the RC Socioeconomic Status and Disability interns organize a clothing drive for first generation and low-income students on campus which culminates in a Pop-Up Thrift Social where people can come to the RC and pick up clothing, food, and listen to great music.
- Winter Clothing Connection Program (WCCP)- The RC Socioeconomic Status and Disability interns created the Winter Clothing Connection Program to provide FGLI students with the opportunity to receive winter clothing from the Wesleyan community that is specifically suited towards their needs. FGLI students can request up to 5 items of clothing that we try our best to match up with a donor to fulfill their needs.
- Self-Care Study Breaks- This program takes place at the end of each semester during one of the readings days and provides a place for students to take a quick break from studying while learning how to make your own all natural self-care products.
- You Belong Series- This program series, organized by the RC Socioeconomic Status and Disability interns, provides a space for FGLI students, faculty, and staff to talk about issues related to classism, privilege, and oppression in the academy in order to foster greater understanding and support for FGLI students in elite collegiate environments.
- Self-Sessions Series- This program series, organized by the RC Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality interns, provides a space for students of color to talk about vulnerable topics related to their growth and healing. Past program topics have included The Self and Family, The Self and Others, and The Self and Gender.
- Affording Study Abroad- This program, organized in collaboration with the RC Socioeconomic Status and Disability interns, the Office of Study Abroad, and the Office of Financial Aid, takes place at the beginning of each semester to educate FGLI students about what their options for studying abroad may be.
- Trust the Process Series- This biweekly program series takes place on Instagram and is organized by the RC Marketing Assistants and highlights students of color on campus who are creatives, makers, and/or artists.
- Gingle- Created by the RC Socioeocnomic Status and Disability interns, this yearly tradition brings together FGLI students from different college campuses to play games and mingle.
- Faculty of Color Lunch Series- This biweekly program series highlights different faculty of color from acoss campus and provides a space for students to learn more about the journeys and experiences of academics of color.
- Liminal Race Dialogues Series- This monthly program series provides a space for students of color who are interested in exploring their identities, the restrictions of identity binaries, and what it means to question binaries.
