At the start of every Spring semester we come together as a community to honor the civil rights legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.  This year, the Wesleyan community is invited to attend a workshop facilitated by CT Black and Brown Student Union (website) entitled “The Cry Is Always The Same: "We Want to be Free," highlighting what our community can do to be aware of and combat overpolicing and the school-to-prison pipeline in lower-income Black and Brown communities.   Please RSVP (link) by Wednesday, February 14th.

The CTBBSU is a grassroots incubation hub for youth development and institutional change that works at the intersection of education justice, youth leadership development and community safety.  The BBSU serves as a statewide hub of resources, technical assistance, capacity building, training and development for young people, educators and community organizers in the state of CT.  Through their work, they offer Education & Leadership Development and seek to build Transformative Networks.  Their current #CareNotCops campaign, run by CT BBSU’s Community First Coalition aims to dissolve Connecticut’s reliance on police officers in schools and build a system that emphasizes community and care in our educational system

This event was made possible through the generous contributions of The Resource Center, Office for Equity and Inclusion, Department of African American Studies and the Center for African American Studies, and the Olin Library.  If you are interested in attending this workshop, please RSVP (link) by Wednesday, February 14th.  If you have any questions about the event, please don’t hesitate to contact Demetrius Colvin at dcolvin@wesleyan.edu.
