Stearns Lecture Sean Gulick, Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin "Life and Death by Impact: Drilling for Clues" Sixty-six million years ago a 6 to 9 miles wide diameter asteroid struck the Earth, resulting in the death of 75% of all species and all non-avian dinosaurs. The asteroid crashed into the Yucatan Peninsula with an impact that is estimated to have been equivalent to several billion atomic bombs. The impact caused global fires, tsunamis, and a "nuclear winter" effect, leading to drastic climate changes. In 2016 as part of the International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Sean Gulick (UT_Austin) led a team of scientists to take cores from the crater to see what happened and when life finally returned to the site. |
