Annual Health Insurance Requirements

The University requires all students to maintain health insurance that is comparable to the University-sponsored insurance plan.  To ensure universal coverage, students will be enrolled and charged up front the first week of July* for the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).  Students with private health insurance must apply for waiver of the SHIP coverage.  Once approved, the charges will be reversed.  Action is required from every student, each year, even if your insurance has not changed since last year.  Athletes must comply with this requirement even if they have submitted insurance information to the Freeman Athletic Center.

  • International plans, not based in the United States, are not considered comparable coverage and students must enroll in the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance plan
  • Any out-of-state Medicaid plans that only cover emergency services in Connecticut are not considered comparable coverage and students should enroll in the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance plan.
  • Any out-of-state HMO plans, including Kaiser Permanente, that only cover emergency services in Connecticut are not considered comparable coverage and students should enroll in the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance plan.

Eligible students received a welcome email from Gallagher Student Health on Wednesday May 8, 2024 with instructions on how to take action.  Students who have not waived/enrolled the SHIP will continue to receive bi-weekly reminder emails from Gallagher Student Health through the August 15, 2024, deadline.

ACTION REQUIRED: Deadline August 15, 2024

Students:

 If you believe you have comparable insurance coverage and wish to apply for a SHIP waiver:

  1. Log into the Gallagher Student Health Portal using your Wesleyan credentials and apply to waive coverage.
    • If your waiver is approved, keep a copy of the confirmation page and reference number for your records.
    • If your waiver is denied, you are required to enroll in the SHIP coverage.
  2. Log into the Medicat Student Health Portal and upload an image of your private insurance card for the Student Health Center records.
  3. Failure to complete a waiver by the deadline will result in continued enrollment and charge for the SHIP.

If you do not have insurance, or do not have comparable insurance coverage and need to enroll in the SHIP:

  1. Log into the Gallagher Student Health Portal using your Wesleyan credentials and enroll in coverage.
  2. You will receive a welcome packet from Gallagher Student Health as well as your insurance benefit information from Wellfleet-Cigna via email.

Remember, proof of private insurance (waive) or online enrollment at www.gallagherstudent.com/wesleyan is required by August 15, 2024.

NOTES:

  • Students studying abroad or not on campus in the Fall are not required to comply with the insurance mandate until Spring semester. Look for communications starting in December with required action items.
  • Students who have completed their financial aid application and qualify for grant assistance to cover the cost of the health insurance policy, should receive an email from Financial Aid in July with steps on how to apply for assistance. Please contact the Financial Aid office with any questions about this procedure.
  • Visits to the Student Health Center are free; however, limited incidental charges may apply. Medications, in-house testing (ie. rapid strep test, rapid mono test) and lab processing fees will be charged to the student account for students with private insurance.  Students can print a claim statement to file with their private insurance plan for reimbursement.  Routine laboratory tests are sent to Quest Diagnostics and will be billed directly from Quest to the private insurance plan.
  • Any student who enrolls in the SHIP and is under the age of 26 has some limited dental and vison care benefits. Please see page 13 and 14 of the benefit guide for additional information.  Wesleyan offers a supplemental dental plan for purchase.  Students who have private medical insurance may wish to consider a dental insurance plan if you do not already have one.

2024-2025 Optional Dental Insurance - Please note that the Wellfleet/Cigna insurance plan offers some dental and vision coverage as part of the benefit package for anyone 26 and younger.  The optional plan is a good choice for anyone with private insurance without dental coverage.
