SUNY Upstate Medical University has recently expanded our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program to increase its current size. This newly enlarged program will offer students the opportunity to perform research from a wide variety of perspectives (basic science, medicine, nursing, and physical therapy). The aim of the SURF program is to nurture undergraduate students into careers that combine biomedical research into their chosen profession, providing them an understanding of research across disciplines and fields. We are specifically looking for students interested in pursuing a PhD, MS, MD, MD/PhD, DNP, DPT, MPH, and Physician Assistant: MS. Depending on a student’s research interests, the students is paired with a faculty member in one of our 4 colleges (Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, and Nursing) to learn more about those professions and to perform cutting edge research. All students will interact throughout the ten-week program allowing them to see research from many different facets by participating in inter-professional education events. SUNY students and students who are underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

If you know of a prospective candidate, can you please share our program website with them and encourage them to apply?

We invite your best students to apply for our NIH/NCI-funded (5 R25CA023944-39) Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program. The program offers a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Students participate in basic or clinical oncology research, a core lecture series designed specifically for them, as well as research and clinical conferences. All participants make a PowerPoint presentation on their research project and submit a report on their research project written in the style of a journal in which their faculty mentor publishes.

A primary goal of the POE program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research. Thus, we are particularly interested in highly qualified students with a serious career interest in cancer research, either as a clinical scientist or laboratory-based research scientist. Our St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers training in leading-edge scientific fields paired with unique mentoring in the St. Jude clinical experience. Highly motivated POE students will have the opportunity to be considered for admission to the St. Jude Graduate School upon completion of their undergraduate degree.

All POE program applicants must already have research experience and be full time students at the time they apply. Applicants must be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals, or possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States (required by the funding agency). All must be in at least their college sophomore year of college at the time they apply. POE medical students spend a minimum of 10 weeks in the program. The minimum tenure requirement for all others is 11 weeks. All POE applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.40 (on a 4.0 scale) in math and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) and at least a 3.40 overall. Program participants will receive a $600/week subsistence allowance. Fully furnished group housing will be provided at no cost for non-local participants.

The POE home page contains links to the program application. The deadline for receipt of all 2024 application materials is February 1, 2024. Early application and submission of materials is highly recommended.

    Additional Tips

I advise students to apply for several programs, since most programs have many more well-qualified applicants than they can place.

Many fine internship opportunities are listed on https://www.aamc.org/professional-development/affinity-groups/great/summer-undergrad-research-programs.

Another option may be https://www.fredhutch.org/en/education-training.html, https://www.training.nih.gov/programs, or https://ccr.cancer.gov/training/summer-internships.

Summer 2024 Internship Opportunity for Wesleyan University Students

    Hi there,

My name is Rachel, and I’m the Executive Director of Coding it Forward, a 501(c)3 nonprofit for early-career technologists creating new pathways into public interest technology.

We’re looking for current and recent students to participate in the Coding it Forward Fellowship, a paid, 10-week summer fellowship that empowers early-career technologists to innovate in local, state, and federal government offices across the United States.

Fellows work across cybersecurity, data, design, product, and software to build a more equitable and effective government for all.

Applications open on October 16th, so we’d love to invite members of your organization to join us for an upcoming information session to learn more about our program, get the inside scoop on our application process, and hear first-hand from our alumni about their experiences.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, and feel free to direct your members’ questions to recruiting@codingitforward.com

The Harvard Biophysics Mentorship Program pairs predoctoral students interested in research with current graduate students. Interested students can apply to be matched with a mentor by filling this brief application: https://forms.gle/6fcuM9tazvhRAREe9. We especially encourage students who may not have regular access to graduate student mentors or who identify with a group that is traditionally underrepresented in the PhD programs to apply.

The deadline for applying to the mentorship program is October 30, 2023.

Students at any stage in their scientific career are encouraged to apply to be a mentee, whether you are trying to get involved in research or considering graduate school. Mentors in the program aim to support each mentee’s scientific journey. Mentors can help mentees

    • get involved in research
    • identify summer research programs to apply to
    • apply to graduate school (e.g. reviewing drafts of research/personal statements)
    • better understand what being a graduate student is like
    • clarify their professional goals

Please note that this mentorship program is geared towards students interested in attending PhD programs and not medical school, law school, or other non-research based higher education. While we encourage students who are curious about multiple careers to apply, we can only give relevant advice regarding PhD programs.

This is the fourth iteration of the Harvard Biophysics Mentorship Program. In the past couple of years, we have matched over 40 students with mentors. Both students and mentors have found the mentorship program to be an enriching experience. We hope you will consider applying to be a part of this year’s cohort!

Please feel free to reach out to Alex Poret (aporet@g.harvard.edu) or Mara Casebeer (mcasebeer@g.harvard.edu) if you have any questions.

    Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location. Read more about this program here.

    Hello,

We are losing Black talent in engineering, and this summer’s affirmative action ruling dealt a further blow to that already dwindling pipeline. A fast-moving dynamic profession needs equally agile educational preparation.

At The Wade Institute of Technology (WIT), we have a solution. Who are we? A new Palo Alto-based engineering college focused on mitigating the acute underrepresentation of African Americans and students of African descent in STEM professions through scholarships and unique educational programs.

We’re seeking applicants for our Master’s in Engineering Management, a 24-month, tuition-free program for Black students with undergraduate degrees in a STEM discipline OR in the liberal arts. This unique program provides background in core engineering areas as well as leadership principles for those who want broad-based management and leadership positions rather than technologist roles. Program and application details can be found here.

As an institution dedicated to providing an education that combines rigorous academic study with the excitement of experiential discovery, we are also proud to provide a small and close-knit community where Black students can be themselves, know they’re valued, and supported in learning from their mistakes and from each other.

I thank you in advance for helping us democratize and diversify higher education and professional opportunities by sharing this program information within your community.

    Regards,
    Lorna Jones
