"[Las Cafeteras is a] uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock. Live, they're magnetic."—Los Angeles Times
Enjoy the urban folk of Las Cafeteras! The seven member East Los Angeles-based band fuses traditional Son Jarocho—Afro-Caribbean music from Veracruz, Mexico—with alternative sounds and political storytelling in English and Spanglish. Their eclectic instrumentation includes stringed jaranas and requintos, quijada (donkey jawbone), marimbol (West African bass), cajon (percussion box), and a tarima (wooden platform used to tap dance/stomp the zapateado). Since 2008, Las Cafeteras have performed with Zack de la Rocha, Ozomatli, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Talib Kweli, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
