Tristan: A love story for the ages
In the heart of the Middle Ages, the plight of lovers revealed
One of the greatest love stories ever told, Gottfried von Strassburg’s Tristan offers an opportunity to survey German literature around 1200 CE, encounter the new ideal of knighthood, and engage in a critique of some of the pillars of medieval society, including the established church, the chivalric code, and conceptions of feudal and familial obligations. And we get to guess how the impressive fragment might have ended.
