Dear Parents and Families of Students in the Class of 2025:

I hope this letter finds you well in the new year. I am excited for these next few weeks as we prepare to welcome our students back for another academic semester. University housing opens at 10am on January 21 and classes begin on January 25. It’s hard to believe Spring Break (March 9-24) is around the corner. Following spring break, the planning phase of course pre-registration runs April 2-15 followed by adjustment from April 17-23. Classes end on May 8, followed by final exams from May 14-17. University housing closes at 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

With their own commencement ceremony just over a year away, most members of the Class of 2025 are focused on completing courses for their majors and earning other credits needed to meet graduation requirements. Time will pass very quickly between now and next May, which makes it especially important for juniors to set aside time to review their academic progress with their faculty advisors to make sure they are on track to graduate next spring. It is a good idea for parents and families to ask their students how they stand in terms of meeting graduation requirements and to let them know I am available to help if they have questions or concerns. I encourage you to ask your student about their major certification form(s); if they are not aware of what the major certification form is, please have them contact me immediately. A little planning now can prevent a lot of worry next spring.

As family members, you have probably wondered for a while about the kind of work your student will embark on after graduation. It is important to encourage your student to take advantage of the junior and senior years by strengthening connections with faculty who might be able to write letters of recommendation for graduate school or serve as personal references for job applications. And, of course, you should also encourage them to visit the Gordon Career Center to polish up their resume and seek advice on how to approach the process of finding a summer internship or a job after graduation.

I will write to you again before the end of the semester. Until then, sending you and your loved ones a happy and healthy 2024!

Take care,

Kelly Dunn, Ed.D.
