April 2023

Dear Parents and Families of Students in the Class of 2026,

It is hard to believe that we are so close to the end of the academic year. The cliché, “time flies,” has never felt truer. I remember just writing to you that your student would soon have a semester of college under the proverbial belt; in less than a month now, they will have two!

Students are in the process of preregistering for fall semester classes. We asked first-year students to explore possible majors and to keep an eye on introductory or gateway courses when selecting courses. We also asked them to think about study abroad and/or research opportunities on campus as they sketch possible academic paths for the semesters ahead. Trying to find the balance between continued exploration and preparing for a major commitment can be a challenge, but that is the beauty of a liberal arts education.

The Wesleyan calendar has been quite busy since classes resumed after spring break. In addition to the demands of coursework, we have just wrapped up WesFest. Spring sports, lectures, panels, and workshops on a range of subjects that have filled students’ days and evenings with learning and fun outside the classroom.

Classes end on May 10, followed by a five-day reading period with time to wrap up projects, papers, and prepare for exams. Since time management issues often emerge as the semester is wrapping up, you may want to ask your student how they are planning for those final projects, papers, and exams. Please remind them that there are many individuals, including professors, faculty advisors, peer advisors and myself, who can help provide support and guidance during this time. Final exams are scheduled from May 16-19.

As the semester comes to an end, students must be moved out of their residence halls by 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 20. Hopefully, their summer plans are shaping up, if not already in place, and include the opportunity for you and your family to spend time with your now-rising sophomore, just relaxing and talking about this past year. Self-reflection is such a critical element of growth. By listening to what your student has learned, I am hopeful that you will, like me, see the ways in which they have grown since joining Wesleyan last August.

It has been our pleasure to work with your student in their first year at Wesleyan, and I am looking forward to the second year. Have a wonderful summer and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

Take care,
