MONDAY NIGHT LECTURE SERIES | AUDIENCE(S)
MONDAY, MAY 5 | 6 p.m. | DANIEL FAMILY COMMONS | USDAN UNIVERSITY CENTER

Jonathan Sterne, McGill University

Jonathan Sterne’s work is broadly concerned with the form and role of communication technologies in large-scale societies. One of his major ongoing projects has been developing an adequate history and theory of sound in modernity. Beyond this work in sound and music, his interests are in historical and cultural studies of media, technology, science and medicine; “new” or “digital” media; cultural theory; disability studies; and the critique of everyday life. His current work focuses on the compression of sound (such as in MP3 format) as well as the manipulation of sound, as in the use of “auto-tune” to correct or alter human pitch.
