MONDAY NIGHT LECTURE SERIES | ENERGY AND EXHAUSTION | SPRING 2025

At the Ends of Exhaustion, a Door

Tung-Hui Hu • University of Michigan

April 28th @ 6pm • Daniel Family Commons

This talk explores the politics of exhaustion through the strange intimacy of sleep streamers and their audiences. These streamers, who can make thousands of dollars in gifts and signups a week, suggest how the domain of work has extended itself into sleep—the one place that we typically imagine is exempt from it. Yet the streamers’ fantasies about “making money while you sleep” are also fantasies about automation and, potentially, a post-work future. In a moment where human expression has been systematically strip-mined and then exhausted by AI, sleep streamers, represent one way of living within those ruins.
