This talk will examine fantasies and anxieties about sex in public bathrooms—a “dirty” place in both senses of the word (i.e. unsanitary and perverse). I’m interested in reading these fantasies and anxieties in terms of our response to others and otherness; what do we fear (or wish) will contaminate us? I am particularly interested in reading the mid-2010s panic about trans women in public bathrooms as a displaced response to the eroticization of public space by queer and trans people, in addition to the more legible anxiety produced by shifting gender norms and the opening-up of possibilities for gender identification and non-identification.
