Middletown, Conn.—Wesleyan University's Davison Art Center presents two installations—"Entering Edo: A World of Pleasure" and "Find Me Unafraid"—from Thursday, September 5 through Thursday, September 26, 2019. The gallery is located at 301 High Street on the Wesleyan campus in Middletown, Connecticut. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 4pm. Gallery admission is free. Please see below for more information about these two installations.

About the Installations
For "Entering Edo: A World of Pleasure," Wesleyan students enrolled in Assistant Professor of Art History and East Asian Studies Talia J. Andrei's "Curatorial Workshop: Images for the Floating World" selected fifteen Japanese ukiyo-e color woodcuts from the nineteenth century in the Davison Art Center collection that provide a glimpse into the pleasure district of Edo (modern-day Tokyo).

In the installation "Find Me Unafraid," the Davison Art Center, curated by Miya Tokumitsu, shows three works from the collection that speak to the themes raised in the book "Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss, and Hope in an African Slum" by Kennedy Odede '12 and Jessica Posner '09. Incoming students will be reading the book as part of the "First Year Matters" program, which identifies a common reading for all new students, providing a shared experience for the entire class as well as an introduction to student life at Wesleyan. The works on display are "10 Yr. Old Picker on Gildersleeve Tobacco Farm" (1917) by Lewis Wickes Hine; "Ida Mae" (2012) by Willie Cole; and "The Battle between the Moneybags and the Strongboxes" (16th c.) by Pieter van der Heyden after Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
