Indonesia is renowned for its diverse musical traditions, which have developed over centuries. Ethnomusicologist/composer Andy McGraw PhD '05 and Indonesian composer/professional singer Peni Candra Rini will present their contemporary collaborative works, inspired by an ancient heart-shaped lute depicted in the reliefs of the ninth-century Buddhist monument Borobudur. Composer/performer Neely Bruce, John Spencer Camp Professor of Music, will play "A Fugue for Maeny," and four string players will present the premiere of "A String Quartet for Sumarsam" (for Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music Sumarsam MA '76), compositions inspired by Bruce's personal connection to the Indonesian.
