Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 11:00am
Crowell Concert Hall
This workshop features two elements of traditional music in Minangkabau: Talempong Pacik and Gandang Tambua.
Talempong Pacik is one of the unique types of traditional music in Minangkabau. Talempong, which consists of six tones, is played by three people. The musical strength of this traditional music is the concept of sound communication from the intertwining of the six notes that are played to build an interesting sound cycle and harmony.
Gandang Tambua is a type of traditional Minangkabau membranophone percussion that comes from the coastal culture of Pariaman. This ensemble consists of gandang tambua and tasa. These two instruments have different tonal characters, namely gandang tambua with a low sound character and tasa with a high- sound character. The difference between these two sound colors interacts to establish a unique communication with a variety of rhythmic patterns.
This concert is presented as part of the Wesleyan University Homecoming 2024 Residency by Members of Isi Padangpanjang, College of Fine and Performing Arts, West Sumatra Indonesia.
