This workshop features two types of traditional dance originating from the Minangkabau region of West Sumatra: Pencak Silat and Randai.

Pencak Silat is a traditional martial art originating from the Minangkabau region of West Sumatra. Apart from being a sport, pencak silat is also an important part of the culture and customs of the Minangkabau people. The characteristics of Minangkabau pencak silat include agile movements, distinctive kicking and punching techniques, and the use of graceful dance moves. This martial art also has philosophical values, such as maintaining harmony, respect, and brotherhood. In practice, pencak silat does not only focus on the physical aspect, but also involves mental and spiritual training. Pencak silat is often performed in cultural events, festivals and championships, thus becoming a symbol of pride and identity for the Minangkabau people.

Randai is a traditional Minangkabau performing art that combines elements of theater, music and dance. Usually, randai tells Minangkabau folk tales or legends with themes of love, struggle and morality. The performers act as characters in the story, accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as talempong and drums. Dynamic dance movements and entertaining dialogue characterize randai. Randai not only aims to entertain, but also conveys cultural values and moral education to the audience, making it one of the important cultural heritages for the Minangkabau people.

This concert is presented as part of the Wesleyan University Homecoming 2024 Residency by Members of Isi Padangpanjang, College of Fine and Performing Arts, West Sumatra Indonesia.
