Held Music, a senior music honors thesis by Charlie Kauffman ’24, is an installation of ambient sound coming in and out of focus. Held Music consists of aluminum, plexiglass, fasteners, one computer, two speakers, and innumerable other items. Held Music uses low-frequency oscillation driven modulations of numerous parameters including tempo, note probability, panning, and timbre to alter existing pieces of music. Additionally, the box which contains the hardware features a slit akin to that of a donation box at a museum, which allows viewers to “donate” comments, or anything else they feel is pertinent to the piece. Held Music can be heard in the lobby of Olin Library during library hours, from Monday, March 25 to Saturday, April 7, 2024 with minor interruptions as necessary.
