The Fall Senior Thesis Theater Festival will include two productions: Aca(pan)demic!—The COVID Variety Hour by Joe Greenfield ’24 and Anna Bella Eema written by Lisa D'Amour and directed by Adri Bollinger ’24; and the costume design installation revise/revisar created by By Martinez-Castaneda ’24.
On display in the Zelnick Pavilion, 221 High Street, Middletown from 6pm to 7pm, and then from 8:30pm to 9pm each evening, revise/revisar is a costume installation that dives into different aspects of identity. The work is a wild and over-the-top exploration into the realm of camp in garment design. The installation is a narrative of transformation in identity–an intertwining story of gender and the Guatemalan and Mayan heritage of By Martinez-Castaneda ’24. Ultimately, it is a story of dueling identities, taking the form of the quetzal (a strikingly-colored bird) and the ornate hawk-eagle, colliding to become a whole. The Project Advisor for the senior theater capstone project revise/revisar is Assistant Professor of the Practice in Theater April Hickman.
With performances in the Patricelli ’92 Theater at 7pm each evening, and directed by Adri Bollinger ’24, “Anna Bella Eema” (2007) is a surreal dark comedy with music from playwright Lisa D’Amour which explores the complex relationship between a small, strange family and the world outside of the trailer park they live in. Lisa D’Amour wrote “Ocean Filibuster” (2022), which received its Connecticut premiere at Wesleyan in May 2023. The Project Advisor for the senior honors thesis project “Anna Bella Eema” is Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater Alex Keegan. The cast features Haddan Gorevic '27, River Isleib '27, and Kiara Reeves '26. The student team members include Assistant Director Jerry Persaud '26, Stage Manager Desirée Lyons '26, Costume Designer Greta Armbrust '25, Sound Choreographer Drew Weddig '24, and Props Coordinator Lila Popell '24.
With performances in the Patricelli ’92 Theater at 8:45pm each evening, Aca(pan)demic!—The COVID Variety Hour is a senior project in variety/comedy performance created by Joe Greenfield ’24 in collaboration with Liv Rubenstein '26, Lilah Steinberg '25, and Raimi Bagwell '26. Your first year of college is hard enough without a global pandemic. Greenfield and collaborators explore stifling isolation and weird, wonderful connection in the midst of an unprecedented lockdown in a series of absurd comedic sketches and commentary. The Project Advisor for Aca(pan)demic!—The COVID Variety Hour is Assistant Professor of Theater Lauren Yeoman.
