A magnificent orchestra of bronze gongs, xylophone, drums, strings, and voices, the gamelan accompanies feasts, ceremonies, and dances. Wesleyan’s Javanese Gamelan ensemble, under the direction of University Professor of Music Harjito and Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music Sumarsam, presents an evening of Javanese gamelan and dance, with a prelude by the Indonesian Community Gamelan Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Harjito. The performance features a dance by Visiting Professor of Dance Veronica Retnaningsih, from the Kasultanan court of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and a guest singer Heni Savitri.
