New London was one of over 1,200 American cities to undergo large-scale redevelopment at midcentury, funded by federal “urban renewal” grants. During the same time, 41,000 miles of highways were built across the country, including a stretch of Interstate 95 that went through north New London. Together, those changes dramatically transformed the face of the city. This talk addresses ongoing public history research conducted by Connecticut College students and faculty, which includes ArcGIS mapping, oral history interviews, and extensive archival work, and has resulted in multiple print and digital publications.
