The Spring Faculty Dance Concert highlights riveting works by Associate Professor of Dance Pedro Alejandro and Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance and African American Studies Joya Powell for an engaging evening of extraordinary embodied conversations.
Pedro Alejandro’s new experimental work “Bachata Variations” is in collaboration with music composer Peter DiGennaro and features Connecticut dancers. The three “Bachata Variations” explore the music and dance tradition of the Dominican Republic in an experimental manner. The “Bachata Variations” project explores innovative ways to partner and unusual ways to use objects in performance.
A video of the spring 2020 dance repertory class, DANC 378 "Repertory and Performance" taught by Pedro Alejandro, performance of "Everywhere I Go, There You Appear" was shared on the Center for the Arts website in May 2020 and featured dancers AJ Garcia '22, Georgia Garrison '22, Pamela Gomez '22, Victoria Huston '22, Max Johnson '20, JJ LaCorte '22, and Kelly Nano-Miranda '23.
Bessie Award-winning Joya Powell brings her Movement of the People Dance Company and Wesleyan University dancers together to share an excerpt of “Song and Dance You” (2016), a visceral work rooted in Africanist traditions. Through multidisciplinary artistry, laughter, and honest portrayals of resistance, the piece reveals how the legacy and injustice of minstrelsy manifests in current society.
