Other Transformations is a component of Audible Bacillus, an exhibition curated by Associate Director of Visual Arts Benjamin Chaffee on display in the Ezra and Cecila Zilkha Gallery. The curator and a member of lucky dragons will introduce the project which is seeking the active participation of Wesleyan musicians during this Music Department Colloquium.
Other Transformations is an experiment in visual music: gathering an archive of graphic representations of music, looking for common patterns in how these images approach translation—from musical idea, to performance, to the experience of listening—and then using these patterns to generate new ideas for performance. What is fundamentally necessary for an image to be read as music?
Throughout the month of February, lucky dragons will continue to refine their investigation of common patterns by adding new material to the archive, culminating in a public performance of the generated graphic scores on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 1pm in the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery
lucky dragons is an ongoing collaboration between Los Angeles-based artists Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck. The group researches forms of participation and dissent, purposefully working towards a better understanding of existing ecologies through performances, publications, recordings, and public art. They have presented collaborative work in a wide variety of contexts, including REDCAT, LACMA, MOCA, and The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; the Centre Georges Pompidou; Walker Art Center; London’s Institute for Contemporary Art; The Kitchen; the 54th Venice Biennale; Documenta 14; The Whitney Museum of American Art (as part of the 2008 Whitney Biennial); and The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, among other venues.
