The phrase  tuned space was central to David Tudor’s account of Rainforest IV and appears to have been central to his decade long quest to “focus and magnify” the acoustical characteristics of a natural space of limited scale in Island Eye, Island Ear.  Max Neuhaus, who performed with Tudor as a percussionist, took a different approach to the environmental presence of sound, making "plausible sound” that is almost indistinguishable from its environment.
