Touring the campus also made me fall in love with Wesleyan. I'm confident that Wesleyan has and will provide me with a great college experience.
Why I love being a tour guide: I enjoy sharing my experiences and helping people make important decisions, like choosing a college. The tour is one of the most crucial aspects of the college application process, where students and families can truly get a feel for a campus. Being part of that process is fulfilling—I connect with people from around the country and the world, share personal anecdotes, and provide insights into our community. I hope prospective students make informed decisions about this chapter of their lives, and I love sharing why Wesleyan and its community were (and will always be) the place for me!

Ava Baeza '25
Pronouns: She/Her
Hometown: Rockport, ME
High School: Camden Hills Regional High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Latin American Studies and Hispanic Literatures double major (Government concentration)
More About AvaWhy Wes: The reason I chose Wesleyan to spend my undergraduate years is actually because of a mutual friend. I met him and thought he was incredible. He would not stop talking about how much he loved his school and whilst in the trenches of my applications I was extremely curious as to where he attended. That was the first time I had ever registered Wesleyan as a possibility, after that I started doing my own research. I wasn’t able to do any in-person tours and so finding other avenues for research was integral to making the decision. I was able to speak with a few others about their experience at Wesleyan and I noticed how genuine everyone seemed in their responses. It never felt like they were trying to sell me on the school, but rather inform me of the benefits as well as the realistic preferences. I think a special thing about Wesleyan is that they value the students’ desire and choice to be at the school in a linear way to their acceptance at the school. That in conjunction with the diverse, oddly specific, class options taught by engaging and empathetic professors had me convinced that I belonged at Wesleyan.
Extracurriculars: Working at Pi and as a Writing mentor for CPE, on the board for Spectrum, a participant in latin and Hip hop dance, and I have a radio show.
Favorite Moment at Wes (so far): My first dance performance was one of the best experiences I have had on this campus. The ability to have started something for the first time ever on campus and have it come to fruition was rewarding.

Celeste McKenzie '26
Pronouns: She/Her
Hometown: North Brunswick, NJ
High School: North Brunswick Township High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: English and Sociology major
More about CelesteWhy Wes: The open curriculum was certainly a point of interest for me, but what I quickly realized upon arriving to campus was that the open curriculum didn't just mean that I could take whatever classes I wanted--it was an invitation to welcome intellectual curiosity and diversity of thought. I have never felt once like I was competing with my peers, or that the coursework I was doing was unimportant or frivolous. The professors are excited about the topics they teach and the students are passionate about the fields they have chosen to study. I am incredibly lucky to be at a school where I know that I can find someone on this campus who not only carries enthusiasm for the same niche topic as me, but is also willing and eager to learn more and make mistakes along the way.
Why I love being a tour guide: I’ll admit that I went into the college admissions process without a clear understanding of what I was doing. It wasn’t until I enrolled at Wesleyan that I truly understood the purpose of campus tours: to get a glimpse of campus life and determine if you can envision yourself there. Looking back, I realize I was more focused on the prestige of the schools I considered and who had the lowest acceptance rate (which is awesome too!) rather than whether I would genuinely be happy at those institutions. I love that as a tour guide I have the opportunity to provide an authentic perspective on our campus and emphasize the importance of choosing a school where you’ll truly thrive. It’s the advice I wish someone had shared with me, and I’m grateful to now share that insight with others as I continue to embark on my own Wesleyan journey.

Hometown: Lancaster, PA
High School: J.P. McCaskey High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Undecided. Planning to apply for a University Major in Urban Studies
More about DanieleWhy Wes? I chose to come to Wesleyan because of the opportunities to explore places off campus, which are rare at liberal arts colleges. I appreciate that Wesleyan is a short distance from cities like New Haven, New York, and Boston, all of which are accessible for a day trip or a weekend, and that it is well integrated into the Middletown community. I also found it to be the perfect size, not so small that you know everyone wherever you go, but small enough that you know someone most places you go. There are plenty of opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. And, of course, I didn’t mind the open curriculum.
Why I love being a tour guide: I love showing prospective students my favorite parts of Wesleyan, and sharing my experience with them. I love learning more about them, their interests, and hopes, especially knowing that anything is possible for them here at Wes. I love getting a feel for what our next incoming class will be like. More about DrewWhy Wes? Before graduating from Naugatuck Valley Community College, I was adamant about transferring to one of the state universities. However, my Psychopathology professor at the time advised that I would flourish at a small liberal arts college and encouraged me to look into such schools. I never imagined attending a prestigious institution like Wesleyan, but the more I researched it, the more I fell in love with the campus and the diverse, energetic, and vibrant community. Before I could decide on which university to transfer to, I realized that I needed a university that would challenge me not only academically but socially as well—a place that would serve as a guiding light in times of uncertainty and be my biggest supporter in my endeavors. This is what Wesleyan represents to me. I knew that if there was any university I could call home, it would be Wesleyan University.
Why I love being a tour guide: For me, it’s the opportunity to meet and engage with diverse, academically driven prospective students. Each tour offers a unique experience, not only for the prospective students but for their families as well, who may be wondering how their students will flourish here at Wesleyan. Eden Mae Richman '27
Pronouns: She/Her
Hometown: Durham, NC & Washington, D.C.
High School: Riverside High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Education Studies & English double major
More About EdenWhy Wes: Wesleyan is so special because it provides a space for exploration, creativity, and self-discovery. Unlike a lot of other universities of the same caliber, Wesleyan doesn’t foster a culture of competition where our peers are enemies and failure is unimaginable. Instead, we are encouraged to learn from each other and grow alongside one another. Failure and rejection is inevitable during any college experience, but at Wesleyan, we are taught to be brave and view this rejection as redirection. There are endless opportunities and possibilities on our campus, which leads to a very involved and interconnected student body that encourages and supports one another. A classmate in my Chinese literature in translation class encouraged me to join my new favorite club while waiting to meet with our professor during office hours. A rugby teammate introduced me to the Jewish community at Wes when she invited me to a Shabbat dinner at Chabad one practice. Students here are open to new experiences and know how to support each other. I especially love that this means there is no one path for individuals to follow, and we are given the independence and opportunity to chart our own course.
Why I love being a tour guide: I love getting to know individuals from all walks of life. My favorite thing in the world is conversing and connecting with people from a variety of different backgrounds especially at a moment with endless possibilities in their futures. I understand the stress and confusion of the college process, and I am eager to be a resource for any student.

Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Computer Science, IDEAS, Dual Degree Engineering Program
More About ElanaWhy Wes: I always loved all subjects and areas of study and wanted to go to a school that encouraged academic exploration. Coming into college, I had no idea what I wanted to study so I wanted an open curriculum. Here I was able to take classes from all disciplines, starting as a government major and ending up as a computer science major. I also chose Wes because of the people. Students are celebrated for being different and, as a result, we are able to learn from each other.

Emiliano Leal '27
Pronouns: He/Him
Hometown: Weehawken, NJ
High School: The Hotchkiss School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Undecided
More about EmilianoWhy Wes: I first toured Wesleyan in the seventh grade, when my sister was touring schools. I distinctly remember walking past the fishbowl in Exley and saying to myself that Wesleyan was the school for me. Fast forward to my senior year, and I'm sitting in my room, proud of myself for having finished all of my applications. My mom walked in and asked if I had done my Wesleyan application. I hadn't even added it to my list. Thankfully there were no supplements and I threw it on at the last minute. Now we're in April and I am doing a final tour of my last three schools, trying to decide. After my day at WesFest, I knew that Wesleyan was the school for me. I've loved my classes, my friends, and am so thankful for the life I am building here, and for the life that Wesleyan will help me build after I graduate.
Why I love being a tour guide: I love to talk and get to know new people, so naturally I found a job where I could get paid for that. Although I haven't finished my freshman year yet, I'm so excited to have the opportunity to share my love for Wesleyan.
Extracurriculars: I am a member of the Wesleyan Spirits, Wesleyan's lower voice (TTBB) acapella group

Favorite Movie: 10 Things I Hate About You
Favorite Song: Ribs - Lorde
Fun Fact: Since 2019, I've spent more time away from home than I have at home. -
Gillian Churchland '28
Pronouns: She/Her
Hometown: New York City, NY
High School: Riverdale Country School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Prospective neuroscience major and chemistry minor. Possibly double majoring in math.
More About GillianWhy Wes: In my college search, I knew that I wanted a liberal arts school with great science and an active arts scene, so Wesleyan seemed like the obvious choice. After visiting, I knew that it was the perfect place to me. I loved the size; it is small enough that I can easily get to know my professors, but larger than many peer schools, meaning that there is so much to do on campus. I also loved that students seemed so involved and excited with activities on campus. But the thing that most drew me to Wesleyan was its reputation for having students who truly love learning and are passionate about their diverse academic interests. It was important to me that I was surrounded by likeminded people who were taking classes because they enjoyed them, not just for a grade. During my visit, I saw that Wesleyan students were intellectually curious and unafraid to explore diverse interests, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of that community.
Why I love being a tour guide: I love being a tour guide because I love Wesleyan, and I want to give as many people the opportunity to see my school as possible! I know that the college process can be very daunting, and I remember feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choices I had to make. I think that being on campus and having the opportunity to hear the experiences of an actual student can make a huge impact on people; I know that it made an impact on me! I hope to show visitors what makes Wesleyan so special to me, and to help students realize what aspects of a college are most important to them.

More About HollyWhy Wes: I have had a unique relationship with Wesleyan because my dad owns two restaurants on campus (WesWings and The Red & Black Cafe!). I soon became aware of my deep connection with Wesleyan students and realized that this was the community I have always been most drawn to. Considering the perfect size, open curriculum, and campus in relation to Middletown, I decided that Wesleyan was the perfect school for me. Ultimately, going to college with my dad could not be further from a con.
Why I love being a tour guide: I feel so fulfilled and at peace at Wesleyan. My love for Wesleyan has made me eager to share every anecdote and detail with prospective students. But through touring, spending a day on campus shadowing a student, WesFest, and accidentally finding my future roommate, I met a lot of great people and they helped me see a life for myself at Wes.

Wesleyan provided me that opportunity through the open curriculum and overall sense of passion each member of the student body has. More About JacquelineWhy Wes: I wanted a place where I would be able to flourish in every aspect of my life- academically, artistically, and athletically. It wasn't until I researched Wesleyan University that I had found a school that I genuinely dreamed of attending. During both my tour and my recruitment weekend at the university, I found myself falling in love with the beautiful architecture and the plethora of opportunities to be involved on campus– and better yet, I wasn’t too far from the city! Additionally, I knew that I would find a place in the community amongst the diverse crowd, and even meet new people who shared similar interests or life experiences! Overall, I would say that Wesleyan offers me the perfect environment to learn and live independently, and I am always surrounded by a community of curious minds consistently willing to learn!
Why I love being a tour guide: I love connecting with people all over, and I love to foster an environment in which I would feel comfortable being my truest self. As a Caribbean-American growing up in a single parent household in Brooklyn, I’ve mastered the ability to look at things from multiple perspectives– specifically understanding people from backgrounds different from mine! I’ve also had the privilege of immersing myself in different extracurriculars which has led me to meet many interesting people over the years. All of this is to say that the best part about being a tour guide is the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life; I specifically love being a Wesleyan University tour guide because I have the pleasure of providing other people with the same eye opening experience of seeing Wesleyan and falling in love with what the school has to offer overall!

Jesse Herzog '25
Pronouns: He/Him
Hometown: Pacific Grove, CA
High School: Pacific Grove High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Double major in Education Studies and Psychology. Possible minor in ASL/Deaf Studies
More About JesseWhy Wes: During my college search I had a pretty specific set of criteria. I wanted a small college/university where I didn't just feel like a number, a good film program to nurture my hobby, and opportunities to try new things and explore. Wesleyan simply checked all of those boxes. But even more than that, I was struck by the collaborative culture and friendly demeanor that I encountered at every turn. After my Dad and I visited various colleges around the northeast and the rest of the country during my Junior Spring, we ranked each on a 1-10 scale in a plethora of categories, including campus attractiveness, curriculum, size, culture. etc. I ranked Wesleyan highest in just about every category. It was clear there was no other place for me than Wes, and I applied Early Decision early in my Senior Fall. Somehow, Wesleyan exceeded my expectations and I developed new passions in addition to fostering my old ones. Due to the open curriculum, I'm now majoring in two departments that I had almost no experience with prior to my arrival at Wes.
Why I love being a tour guide: I love showing people around my school! I remember when I toured Wes as a prospective student with an enthusiastic, engaged guide. It made a huge difference for me in my college search and I love that I can now give back and show new prospective students why I love Wes.
Extracurriculars: Ultimate Frisbee (I play for both the all-gender team and the men's team), Survivor: Wesleyan (our Wes version of CBS's reality show Survivor)

More About LizbethWhy Wes? When I first got matched to Wesleyan through QuestBridge, I was definitely nervous about the transition. The open curriculum has been a huge plus by letting me explore my interests without being boxed in by a rigid structure. More About LuciaWhy Wes? I chose Wes because the open curriculum allowed me to explore my various academic interests. I loved being able to take whatever classes I wanted and not being restricted to a singular career path. Unsurprisingly my inability to choose just one subject to focus on led me to majoring in College of Letters, which allows me to put my variety of interests into conversation with one another, creating all kinds of learning I never thought possible. Finally the open curriculum at Wes means that everyone is in the classes they are in because they chose to; everyone wants to be there and is excited and passionate about learning. At Wes I found that I am constantly learning and surrounded by supportive, brilliant teachers and peers.
Why I love being a tour guide: Applying for university was one of the most exhausting, stressful times of my life, but it also resulted in me finding my community and a space to embrace who I am and branch out of who I was. More about MaisieWhy Wes? I knew I wanted to go to a liberal arts school with an open curriculum where I could take any and all classes that interested me and with professors for whom teaching undergraduates was a priority, but a lot of schools fit this criteria. What set Wesleyan apart for me was the community here. My suspicion – which has since been proven right – was that Wesleyan is filled with so many interesting people who want to share and bond over the things that they’re passionate about.
Why I love being a tour guide: I absolutely love talking and answering questions about Wesleyan and my experience here. I want to be able to convey to others what a special place this is and help prospective students on their college journey!

Matthew Gilbert '25
Pronouns: He/Him
Hometown: Silver Spring, MD
High School: Sidwell Friends School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Earth and Environmental Science and Environmental Studies double major
More About MatthewWhy Wes? For me, there were two important factors for my college selection process: academics and community. For academics, my high school had a pretty competitive environment when it came to academics and I knew that that wasn’t the environment in which I learned best. Wesleyan was such a big change in that regard since everyone is so supportive and collaborative when it comes to schoolwork and studying for exams. For community, I was blown away by the number of extracurriculars that were available at Wesleyan and the wide range of classes and student groups that people were involved in, and that made me really excited to come and get involved with as many as I could.
Why I love being a tour guide: Being on a tour was when I realized Wesleyan was my dream school and I really hope I’ll be part of that moment for others.
Extracurriculars: I’m a coordinator for the Eco-Facilitator program in the Sustainability Office (a three-semester program to work on sustainability initiatives on campus), a paleobotany lab member, I do work for Wild Wes (an on-campus permaculture garden), and I’m a member of botany club and ecology club.
Favorite Moment at Wes (so far): Definitely the silent disco. On the last night of my orientation, before all the other students moved in, we had a silent disco in the middle of Olin Library where we all had headphones with music and could change between stations to dance to what we wanted to. It felt like a perfect end to orientation and was a really memorable experience with my friends.
Favorite Movie: Mamma Mia!
Favorite Song: Changes constantly, but I’ve been listening to a lot of Kali Uchis recently
Fun Fact: I taught myself how to play the ukulele!

Max Forstein '27
Pronouns: He/Him
Hometown: Moorestown, NJ
High School: George School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: College of Social Studies & Government double major
More About MaxWhy Wes:
I was initially attracted to Wes because of its vibrant mix between rigorous academics and strong arts programs. I myself am not an artistic person, but I was looking for a place where I could dip back into the arts once again, feeling comfortable enough in my own skin to do so. After visiting, what stood out was the kindness of the people at this University and how down-to-earth and passionate they were about representing the school. I felt a sense of belonging here unlike I had experienced at any other school before, so I knew I had to apply. In the time I've spent here so far, I can truly say that I've found my people who I love dearly, and I am a part of a community that let's me express myself in ways never thought imaginable. In the classroom, on the frisbee field, and even sometimes on stage, I am encouraged to step outside my comfort zone and try new activities, regardless of how good I may be at something. Instead, this community applauds people for trying something different and putting themselves out there, and that has helped me feel the same sense of belonging I got a glimpse of as a prospective student.
Why I love being a tour guide:I am very passionate about the university I attend. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to study in Wesleyan classrooms and be a member of the Wesleyan student community. My favorite part about being a tour guide is taking what I love about being here and showing others what it has done for me, with the hope that they will see themselves here as well. If I can convert my love for Wesleyan into a message towards prospective students who can see themselves walking down College Row the same way I do every morning, then I believe I've done my job as a Tour Guide, and that makes me love this position so much.
Extracurriculars:Sports Editor & Assistant Head Copy Editor for the Wesleyan Argus, Student Photographer for Wesleyan Athletics, Throw Culture Ultimate Frisbee, AuralWes, Outing Club, Intramural Basketball

Maxwell Maveus '26
Pronouns: He/Him
Hometown: Minnetonka, MN
High School: Minnetonka High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Prospective College of Social Studies and Environmental Studies double major
More About MaxwellWhy Wes: The more I discovered about Wesleyan, the more it felt like the right school for me. I would be remiss not to mention Wesleyan’s unique academic offerings the open curriculum has allowed me to pursue. Limited only by my imagination, I have found myself in an array of classes spanning from Economics to Japanese culture through food. Wes carefully fosters each student's interdisciplinary interests while challenging us to discover new fields. Ultimately, however, I chose Wesleyan because of its community. Every student on campus is replete with niche passions, and I constantly discover new hobbies through my friends. I have yet to meet a student who lacks authentic excitement for their field of study. When Wes is referred to as “diversity university,” it encapsulates every sense of the word. Wes was my top-choice university, and I am deeply grateful to say it has surpassed all my expectations.
Why I love being a tour guide: Not everyone would thrive at Wesleyan. Being a tour guide helps prospective students envision themselves immersed in our community, and I can witness one decide on their future home. Being a tour guide is thus one small way I can positively impact students whose shoes I wore not long ago.

More About MitchellWhy Wes: When looking at colleges, not many schools offered a high-level dance program while being academically rigorous. Many were one or the other, or only allowed me to dance but not take academic classes. I saw at Wes that there would be no problem taking both dance and academic classes. I also discovered that I have many different academic interests and although I have these contrasting passions, I saw that Wes gave me an opportunity to explore them all without restraint and allowed me to dive deep into any subject I find interesting while also shaping my education in the way I best see fit.

Hometown: Merion Station, PA
High School: Lower Merion High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Government and Music double major with a Data Analysis minor
More About NathalieWhy Wes? I started college at a different university, and while I loved its liberal arts curriculum and strong musical campus presence, I struggled to find my place with the strong core curriculum and heavily sorted major pathways. I was drawn to Wesleyan because of its emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, generalist philosophy, and general reputation for having well rounded, passionate students. I chose Wes hoping to meet people pursuing a wide variety of interests in very different ways, and to have access to that vast array of opportunities myself- and I'm so glad I did.
Why I love being a tour guide: Coming to Wes has been an extremely positive experience for me, and I have many unique stories and opportunities that wouldn't have been possible anywhere else. I love answering questions from prospective students and families, and doing my best to convey what makes Wesleyan such a vibrant and interesting place to go to school.

Nini Hayes '27
Pronouns: She/Her
Hometown: New York City, NY
High School: Friends Seminary
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Neuroscience double major on the pre-med track, College of East Asian Studies (minor)
More About NiniWhy Wes: I have so many interests in completely different fields, and I chose Wes because I knew that the Open Curriculum would enable me to bridge biology/neuroscience, Asian culture, and dance. Rather than having to choose one path for a career, I can pursue them all at Wes. I am currently involved in a research lab on campus, a director for Wes Arabesque ballet club, a member of Precision Dance Ensemble, studying Mandarin, and spending this summer abroad in China!
Why I love being a tour guide: When I toured Wes, I had an incredible tour guide who enabled me to create a vivid image of myself at this school. Originally on the fence, the tour solidified my decision. A good tour guide can make you feel like you connected to and can visualize yourself (or not!) at a school. Whether you chose the school or not is not my ultimate goal as a tour guide, but instead, whether you received the information that helped you make the best decision for yourself. I love to be a tour guide so I can make a difference and help people find the school that best fits them.

Pronouns: She/Her
Hometown: Acton, MA
High School: Acton-Boxborough Regional High School
Major(s), Minors, Certificates: Prospective Biology Major and Religion minor
More About RachelWhy Wes: I feel like I can do anything and everything here. I feel that most Wes students have a genuine love for learning – something I didn’t feel at my large public high school. Here, I find that students aren’t just looking to scrape by in their classes to get a good grade – rather, they want to dig deeply into the material, to ask hard questions and to make mistakes and to learn in a way that feels genuine. I can’t ever take a class in every single department at Wes, but I can have friends who have wildly different curriculums than I, and we can talk about our classes and the things we are learning over lunch or a bike ride or even whispers between sets as we watch a friend do stand-up comedy. I am so appreciative of all of the things that I can do outside of the classroom at Wesleyan – moments that bring me academic, social, and emotional growth in ways I can’t even begin to explain. All of these activities can vary from week to week, and I find myself steeped in so many wonderful things! Wesleyan is this sort of magical place where one can be all of these things – a committed student who loves inquiring about science, a talented writer, a genuine friend, a planner, a doer, and much, much more.
Why I love being a tour guide: As a tour guide, I get to convey the multiplicity of Wesleyan to prospective students because it’s undoubtedly the best part about my time here. I love to connect with people through conversation and storytelling, and this role allows me to do this with new prospective students each week!

More About SophieWhy Wes: By the time I applied to college I’d already seen both of my two older sisters go through the process: one ended up as a D1 athlete at a big UC, the other at a small liberal arts college in southern California. Wesleyan did, and has continued, to fulfill those conditions fabulously.
