¡Bienvenida / Bienvenido! The Hispanic literatures and cultures (HISP) major is designed for students committed to achieving fluency in Spanish and developing an understanding of the Spanish-speaking world, which is incredibly rich in history and heritages. At Wesleyan, HISP majors develop the linguistic proficiency and intercultural awareness necessary for living, studying, and working successfully in a Spanish-speaking environment, in the United States or abroad.
Students who major in Hispanic literatures and cultures use their knowledge and skills to pursue careers in a variety of fields, including law, education, international business, social work, and the medical professions.
What You'll Study
- The HISP major focuses on the language and cultural expressions of Spanish-speaking peoples worldwide, through the examination of literary and non-literary texts, as well as performative and visual arts.
- As a HISP major, you'll have the flexibility to tailor the major to your intellectual interests, taking four courses that focus on specific areas and historical periods, and six additional courses of your choice.
- All students are strongly encouraged to spend at least one semester studying abroad. There are excellent programs in Spain, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and you can count up to four courses from study abroad toward the major.
