Barbara McClintock is a professional author and illustrator. She has written and/or illustrated over forty books for children, primarily picture books for young readers.
Her work has received numerous national and international awards and citations, including five New York Times Ten Best Illustrated Picture Book Awards, two New York Times Notable Book Citations, four American Library Association Notable Book Awards, a Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor Award, two Time Magazine Best Illustrated Books Awards, a British Fantasy Award and a China Times Best Illustrated Books Award. Her books have been on best picture books lists in The Wall Street Journal, Bank Street College, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, School Library Journal, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Public Library, The Evanston Public Library and other national and international publications. Her books have been translated into a dozen languages. One of her books is a best selling title in Japan. She has created editorial illustrations for The New Yorker and The New York Times Book Review, and her work appeared in all three of Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly’s Little Lit Raw Junior graphic novel series.
She has lectured about her work at The National Diet Library, Tokyo Japan, Parson’s School of Design, Pratt Institute and RISD. She was a visiting lecturer at The Maurice Sendak Fellowship Program at The University of Connecticut, and has lectured and given presentations at The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators conventions in the US, France, China and Japan and the Sharjah Children’s Book Festival in the UAE.
Her artwork has been exhibited and is in the collections of museums, galleries and libraries around the world.
Barbara has served on the board of directors of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, and chaired The Original Art Show at The Society of Illustrators.
