Resist Authoritarianism! Defend Higher Ed!

I applaud Harvard University standing up for the shared values of higher education. Federal funding for universities must not depend on a loyalty oath. Leaders in civil society—in higher education, business, and in religious institutions—must resist compromising on their core missions. The health of our democracy depends on the freedom to work with the federal government without having to follow the ideological dictates of those in power.

The partnership between the federal government and higher education has been extraordinarily successful, leading to scientific breakthroughs, cultural contributions and to a more educated citizenry. When we have worked together, we have served the nation so well, regardless of which party was in power.

Respect for due process and support for freedom of inquiry and freedom of expression will be the foundation of any efforts to improve higher education. As partners, not adversaries, we can build a better future for our students and the country.
