In a letter written in 1509, Albrecht Dürer stated that he was turning his attention to making prints again, and ruefully claimed that if he had done so earlier, he would be much richer. Three of the most important and influential painters—Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Pablo Picasso—devoted significant time throughout their careers to making prints. What did prints offer them? What artistic and technical challenges seized their imaginations? How could prints be a vehicle for ideas, fame, and fortune? And how did their experimentation and virtuoso performances expand the possibilities for future printmakers? Organized in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Friends of the Davison Art Center, these three classes will meet at the Center, where participants will view and discuss selected master prints in the collection.
