||Love history and learning about the past? Special Collections & Archives student workers get hands-on experience working with primary resources such as archives, rare books, theses, photos, local history materials, and more. Duties may include cataloging theses, describing archival collections, doing basic conservation work with rare books and archives, helping researchers by making photocopies and scans, and working closely with the staff on other projects as assigned. Must be detail-oriented and responsible with strong organizational skills. Some physical activity (e.g., lifting boxes) will be required. Foreign language proficiency is a plus.
There is an additional specialized position open for a Shelf Prep Assistant. In addition to the duties and requirements above, this position is for someone with fine manual dexterity and spatial skills who is especially good at hand-crafts. The Shelf Prep Assistant will get hands-on experience working with and creating housing for rarebooks (see http://sca.blogs.wesleyan.edu/2011/05/19/shelf-prep-i/ for a glimpse into the work). Neat handwriting is a plus.
