Cards Trim Bates, 7-2, in Final Regular-Season Match, Qualify for the NESCAC Tourney at Middlebury


Hosting Bates Mon., April 21 in their final regular-season match, the Cardinals won all three doubles battles and four of six singles affairs for a 7-2 victory. It upped the team's mark to 11-6 this year overall and 5-3 vs. NESCAC opponents. Anika Fischer '10 (right in photo) delivered a win at #1 doubles alongside Madalina Ursu '09, then came back from a one-set deficit to claim a 4-6, 6-4, (10-2) win at #2 singles. Linda McDougal '11 (left in photo) teamed with Alex Sirois '09 for a win at #2 doubles, then swept her Bates adversary at #5, 6-1, 7-5. Sirois also won in straight sets at #6 (6-3, 6-3) while Ania Prenta '09 was a victor at #1 singles (6-3, 6-3) and third doubles, paired with Lizzie Collector '09. The team qualified for the NESCAC tournament, hosted by Middlebury Fri.- Sun., April 25-27. The Cardinals were the sixth seed and played the third-seeded Tufts Jumbos in the first round Friday. The match came down to the wire with Tufts coming away with a 5-4 win. The Cards picked up a doubles win at #1 from Rachael Ghorbani '09 and Fischer while Ghorbani, McDougal and Sirois were singles winners at #3, #5 and #6, respectively, all in straight sets. Thus the team closed out another successful campaign with double-digit wins (11-7 overall) and its first-ever trip to the NESCACs. The best individual winning percentage was turned in by Sirois with a 9-3 mark, mostly at #6. The doubles team of Preneta and Collector played almost every dual match as a tandem and posted a 13-7 overall record. Sirois and McDougal were a pair half the season at #2 and went a solid 6-2.
