Two Freshmen Score First Career Goals in 2-0 Win Over Smith as Team Sports Best Start in 15 Years
After Haley Baron '12 (#16, photo insert lower right, courtesy of SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) got the Cards on the board in the 56th minute off a nifty pass from Cora Lautze '11, Emma Nitzberg '12 (#10, main photo, also courtesy of SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) added the insurance goal in the 74th minute as Wesleyan downed Smith, 2-0, Wed., Sept. 17 in Middletown. Marissa Trevisan '09 (#9, right in main photo) got the second goal started with a pass from deep on the left side and Hillary Biggs '12 (#17, left in main photo) got the next touch before the ball ended up on Nitzberg's foot. Making her first career start in goal, Clare Colton '12 stopped two Smith attempts in securing the shutout as Wesleyan had a 20-6 advantage in the shot department. Wesleyan's 2-0-1 record to inaugurate the campaign gave the squad its best start since winning six in a row to begin the 1993 season. But the Cardinals got back to NESCAC play with a trip to Middlebury Sat, Sept. 20 and Middlebury ended the Cardinals streak by handing Wesleyan a 2-0 setback. The win extended Middlebury's unbeaten stream vs. Wesleyan to 14 games (12-0-2) since 1994. The Cardinals will be at home for their next outing, facing in-state NESCAC rival Trinity Sat., Sept. 27.
