Returning 17 lettermen from the 8-8 squad of 2007-08, nine of whom saw action in at least six dual matches with six posting winning records, Wesleyan has a lot of veteran talent entering the 2008-09 campaign. The team was ranked sixth among the 15 New England Wrestling Association squads in the preseason poll. Five members of the squad are past New England placewinners, led by 125-pounder Dan Bloom '10, who is twice decorated. Team co-captain Greg Hurd '10 (main photo), at 174, and Josh Berkovic '10, at 165, both took regional honors last season while Jeremy Stuart '09 (184) and Zach Rolfe '10 (157) were placewinners in 2006-07. Other stalwarts back on the squad include Dave Bachy '10 (149), John Gottfried '09 (197), Dan Conroy '11 (Hwt), Chris Alvanos '11 (125) and team co-captain Alex Segal '09 (184, photo insert upper left). With the other eight returning lettermen hoping to step up their effort and the arrival of nine freshmen and a sophomore transfer, Wesleyan will have a good deal of depth at most weight classes. The team will begin the 2008-09 season with three invitational tournaments during the first semester, the first at Roger Williams University Sat., Nov. 15. At that time, head coach Drew Black will have the opportunity to put a majority of his athletes to the test against competitors from about a dozen area colleges. During the second semester, the team will have about 15 duals matches, almost all of which will be against NEWA opponents.
