Cards Capture Consolation Title at NEWA Dual Championship as Three Individuals Post 3-0 Marks

Seeded eighth in the New England Wrestling Association Duals hosted by Bridgewater St. Sun., Jan. 20, Wesleyan finished one spot below its seed but in resounding fashion. After falling to ninth-seeded Plymouth St., 25-15, the Cardinals destroyed its consolation opponents Western New England, 32-3, and Coast Guard, 48-6, to secure ninth place of the 15 teams. Leading the way for Wesleyan was 149-pounder Dave Bachy '10 (photo) as he recorded three pins on the day, accounting for 18 team points. Two other Cardinals ended the tournament with 3-0 marks - Greg Hurd '10 at 174 pounds and Zach Rolfe '10 at 157 pounds. The squad took on Coast Guard once again Thurs., Jan. 24 in New London in their annual regularly scheduled meeting. Things again went Wesleyan's way as the Cardinals prevailed, 31-7, winning eight of the 10 bouts. Bachy, Rolfe and Hurd all won again with Hurd getting a major decision. Five matches were decisions by the Cardinals while two others were forfeits. Wesleyan had its hands full on Sat., Jan. 26, traveling to Southern Maine to take on the Huskies, who placed sixth at the NEWA Duals, along with NEWA champion Johnson & Wales. Still, both matches were close as Wesleyan fell to the host, 27-19, and to J&W, 29-18. With three forfeits going to Wesleyan, the squad captured five other bouts on the mats with Bachy winning twice to bring his dual-match record this season over the .500 mark at 7-6. The squad heads to WPI for its next match Thurs., Jan. 31.
