Cards Take #8 Amherst into Overtime Before Falling 9-8 - Team's Next Stop is Florida
Coming back from a 5-2 deficit early in the second half to force overtime vs. Little Three rival Amherst Sun., March 9, Wesleyan came up a goal short on the final scoreboard, losing 9-8. Wesleyan gained its first lead of the contest just 39 seconds into the extra frame as Jess Chukwu '11 (#23, photo courtesy of SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) completed her hat trick to spot the host an 8-7 edge. But Amherst tied the game two minutes later and got the game-winner with 2:20 showing on the clock. Wesleyan appeared to have tied the game in the closing seconds when Charlotte Hastings '10 put the ball in the net with :06 to go but the goal was called back due to an Amherst violation. The Amherst keeper then made the save on Hastings' free-position attempt to preserve the win. Wesleyan also got a multiple-goal game from Sarah Orkin '09 as she netted a pair while Laurel Sticklor '09 got her fifth goal of the season, putting her in a tie with Chukwu for the early team lead. Chukwu scored all three of her goals in a span of 11 minutes late in the game accounting for the Cardinals' final three tallies. The squad will take its 1-1 mark to the warmer Florida climate for its next two games, the first coming on Wed., March 12 against Ohio Wesleyan.
