Cardinals Strike First at Augsburg but Host Strikes Last and Takes Both Games in Weekend Series


Amanda Nickels '08 (#21, photo) posted the first goal of 2007 for the Cardinals as she connected off a feed from Conner Brannen '10 midway through the first period at Augsburg Fri., Jan. 5. The Auggies came back for a pair of first-period goals to take the lead before Jessica Fischer '08 found the net with an unassisted power-play goal 7:27 into the second frame. The teams looked destined for overtime before Augsburg got the game-winner with 2:28 to go. Wesleyan enjoyed a power-play for the final 1:37 and pulled its goalie as well, but could not come up with the equalizer. Augsburg also captured the second game of the series Sat., Jan. 6, 4-1. The Auggies netted a pair of goals just 31 seconds apart early in the first period to grab a quick two-goal lead before Fischer (goal) and Brannen (assist) combined for a Wesleyan power-play tally with 5:40 left in the frame. After a scoreless second period, Augsburg added the insurance goal at 4:34 of the third period and sealed the 4-1 decision at 14:48. The Cardinals conclude their Minnesota trip with their third and final game of the excursion vs. St. Catherine's at Ridder Rink Mon., Jan. 8.
