Cards Open NESCAC Season with Win Over Conn. as Ali Fourney '09 Leads in Points & Rebounds
Opening the second half with a 25-15 burst to hold a 58-45 lead with just over 10 minutes left, the Cardinals held off a charging Conn. College squad down the stretch and made nine of 10 free throws to secure a 76-66 NESCAC win Sat., Jan. 19. It was the Cardinals' 11th consecutive victory over the Camels dating back to the 1996-97 season. Wesleyan, which got 21 points and eight rebounds from Ali Fourney '09 (#11, photo by SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) to lead the team in both departments, had the game's largest lead at 66-52 with 6:41 to go. But a 10-1 Conn. spurt narrowed the gap to 67-62 with 3:16 left. The Cards sank all but one of their 10 tries from the charity stripe in the final three minutes, four of them by Nikki Maletta '08, who had 13 points. Meredith Lowe '09 also chipped in with 13 points while Lucy Sprung '08 added 16. Maletta, Lowe, Sprung and Fourney have now all scored in double-digits each of the last three contests. Conn. was held to two baskets on its final nine possessions with three misses and four turnovers. Wesleyan has a Little Three game slated for Williams Tues., Jan. 22 in its next outing.
