Lucy Sprung '08 and Meredith Lowe '09 Gain All-Tourney Honors in Naismith Classic at Springfield


After winning eight of their last nine games following a season-opening loss, the Cardinals ran into a buzz saw in the likes of Bates during the Championship of the Naismith Classic at Springfield Fri., Jan.4, falling by an 80-60 count. Standouts for Wesleyan during the tournament included Lucy Sprung '08 (#34), who had a career-high 25 points to go with 12 rebounds in the championship contest, and Meredith Lowe '09 (#20), who netted a career-high 19 points in the team's opening-round win over the host. In that contest, Sprung was good for 21 points and nine caroms, narrowly missing a double-double which would have given her four straight. Over her last four games, Sprung has hit for 86 points and gathered 53 rebounds along with eight assists. Both Sprung and Lowe picked up all-tournament honors. The Cards hung with Bates for the first seven minutes before an 18-5 spurt gave the Bobcats a commanding 33-17 edge, en route to a 45-31 halftime lead. Wesleyan got no closer in the second half as Bates pulled away. The Cardinals got back to their winning ways at home Tues., Jan 8, taking the measure of Salve Regina, 62-44. Sprung had 13 points and seven boards while Lowe had a game-high 13 rebounds along with six points. Ali Fourney '09 triggered a decisive 27-7 run between the first and second half for Wesleyan with 10 of her 14 points as the Cards turned a tight 18-15 game into a comfortable 45-22 margin. Fourney added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Wesleyan hosts Fitchburg St., Sat., Jan. 12, in its next outing.
