Directing the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over visiting Western Conn., Wed., Sept. 26, Head Coach Gale Lackey notched victory number 400 in her career. Gale is in her 23rd year at Wesleyan with a cumulative mark of 387-307. She came to Wesleyan in 1978 with one year of college volleyball coaching at Bridgeport under her belt, posting a 13-13 record there. She took over the volleyball team at Wesleyan in 1985, the team's second varsity season, after coaching Wesleyan's field hockey squad during the fall for seven seasons. Current NESCAC Player of the Week Lisa Drennan '09 led the charge vs. WCSU with 15 kills and a .542 hitting efficiency. As a team the Cardinals hit at a solid .422 pace. Fotini Xenidis '11 added nine kills while setter Ellie Healy '10 contributed 36 assists. Caroline Rober '08 did her part in the middle with five blocks and libero Ruby Hernandez '11 (#1, photo insert lower left) made 14 digs. Wesleyan gave Coach Lackey win no. 401 in thrilling fashion Fri., Sept. 28, 3-2 over Amherst in the opening round of the 18th annual Wesleyan Invitational. Wesleyan won the final two games, breaking a 6-6 tie with seven consecutive points in the deciding contest for a 15-9 win. Drennan racked up 33 kills, matching her team record, while Hernandez tied the mark of 34 digs in a match set by Tory Molnar vs. Coast Guard in 2003. Xenidis contributed 13 kills, Healy had 59 assists and Ashley Farrow '10 came through with eight blocks. The Cardinals faced Old Westbury and Trinity Sat., Sept. 29 to close out the Invitational, winning both by 3-0 counts to give Wesleyan the title. Xenidis led the way with 16 kills vs. Old Westbury while Emily Dine '09 dished out 30 assists. In downing Trinity, Drennan added an amazing 24 kills with Healy tossing up 37 assists. Both were named to the all-tournament team. For her fine play throughout the week, Hernandez was honored as the NESCAC Player of the Week. At Conn. College Wed., Oct. 3, the Cardinals six-match win streak came to an end in a five-game NESCAC match with the home squad capturing the final game, 15-11. Hernandez posted a team-record 36 digs during the match. Wesleyan concludes the week with another NESCAC match, this one at home vs. Trinity Friday, Oct. 5.
