Lisa Drennan '09 Collects 93 Kills in 16 Games While Head Coach Gale Lackey Gets Win Number 399
Racking up 93 kills during a 3-1 weekend at the MIT Invitational, Fri. & Sat., Sept. 21 & 22, Lisa Drennan '09 (#7, photo) averaged 5.8 kills with a .293 efficiency in leading Wesleyan to fifth place among 16 teams. Drennan's performance was good enough to earn her a spot on the all-tournament team as well as garner NESCAC Player of the Week honors. The Cardinals upended Muhlenberg, Vassar and Conn. College, the latter two in exciting five-game matches, with Drennan collecting 33 kills vs. Vassar alone. That figure tied her own single-match team record set against Amherst last year. Coming into the season with 391 career victories, 378 of those at Wesleyan, head coach Gale Lackey (sitting in background of photo) is up to 399 wins in her 23+ years of volleyball coaching. Her squad can give her magic #400 when Wesleyan inaugurates the home schedule Wed., Sept. 26 vs. Western Connecticut. Only one previous Cardinal coach has ever reached 400 career wins in any sport while coaching at Wesleyan - Peter Kostacopoulos, who amassed 488 wins during 28 seasons with the baseball team.
