Wesleyan Opens 2008 Campaign in California with Double-Header Loss at La Verne
On the first of seven playing dates for 14 games in California, the Cardinals fell to La Verne in a twin-bill Wed., March 12, dropping a 10-2 decision in five innings in the first game and battling down to the wire in the nightcap, but coming up short by a 1-0 count. Marcia Whitehead '08 (#6, main photo) led the team at the plate with two hits on the afternoon. She broke up a would-be no-hitter for the La Verne pitchers in game two with a seventh-inning single. She also had a safety in the first game. Meghan Dendy '10 (#7, photo insert lower left) had a solid effort on the mound in the second contest, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out six. But La Verne made its one run in the second inning hold up for the sweep. The team plays its second double-header against local talent Thurs., March 13 by visiting Occidental.
