Clinching First-Ever NESCAC Playoff Spot, Cards Do it with DH Sweep of Middlebury for 20-Win Year


Snagging the final out of game one on a pop to her spot at shortstop, Molly O'Connell '09 (#18, left in photo) can't help but smile after she finished the game with a pair of doubles and her first home run of the season to drive in four runs during the 9-3 Wesleyan win vs. Middlebury Sat., April 28. Marcia Whitehead '08 (#6, right in photo) had a hop in her step as well as she laced four singles in the game for three RBI and has now moved within two hits of the all-time Wesleyan career record. In just three seasons, Whitehead has 117 safeties to her credit. The Cardinals got four-hit pitching from Karla Hargrave '08 who was touched for a three-run homer by Middlebury for all the Panther runs in the 4th inning. In the second game, a 4-1 Wesleyan win, Molly Gaebe '07 yielded just one run on six hits and worked out of a jam in the 7th for her eighth victory of the season. She added seven strikeouts to her career total which stands at 393. O'Connell roped two more hits including a two-run single in the 5th as she went 5-for-7 on the day with six RBI. Becca Feiden '08 added a pair of hits and two runs to aid the cause. Wesleyan, now with a team-record 21 victories, and Middlebury completed their three-game series Sun., April 29 with Middlebury gaining some revenge with a 10-1, 5-inning triumph. Next up will be a trip to Medford, Mass. for the NESCAC tournament Fri., May 4 where the Cards face host Tufts, top-seeded in the NESCAC East, in the opening round. The other first-round matchup will be Williams vs. Trinity. The playoffs continue Sat., May 5 and Sun., May 6 with a double-elimination format.
