Women's Lax Defeats Wellesley by Largest Margin in 18-Game Series Behind Scoring of Meredith Smith '17
Playing Wellesley for the first time since 2000 and evening the all-time series record at 9-9, Wesleyan planted a 14-4 defeat on the Blue with the 10-goal margin of victory representing the largest by the Cardinals among their nine wins. Twice before, Wesleyan had beaten Wellesley by a nine-goal differential with both the triumphs coming at home. Wesleyan got five goals and an assist from Meredith Smith '17 as she accounted for half of the Cardinals' first-half markers en route to an 8-1 lead at intermission. Abby Wheeler '17, who finished with a hat trick, had a pair of tallies in the opening period. Maddy Coulter '14 (#3, right side photo) put Wesleyan ahead to stay just 2:09 into the contest as she finished with a goal and two assists. Martha Harding '16 also helped Wesleyan build an 8-0 lead before Wellesley got on the board in the final minute of the period.
Wesleyan tacked on six additional goals in the second half as Hannah Plappert '16 (#19, left side photo) put home the final two, giving the Cardinals a 14-2 bulge with three minutes to go. The Blue got the final two goals of the game off reserve keeper Grace McCann '17, who allowed three goals in the second half with five saves. Starter Nina Labovich '16 faced just two shots on net in the opening 30 minutes, making one save. Wesleyan outshot its host 38-12 overall.
Now 3-0 in non-conference play, the Cardinals host Skidmore Sat., March 22 in another non-league affair in their next outing.
