16th-Ranked Men's Squash Opens 2014 with Exciting 5-4 NESCAC Victory at Bowdoin
Improving their seasonal record to 8-1 following a thrilling 5-4 NESCAC victory at Bowdoin Jan. 14 to inaugurate the 2014 portion of the schedule, the Cardinals got a deciding 3-2 win from Zander Nassikas '14 (main photo) to break the 4-4 tie. Earlier in the match, Wesleyan secured 3-0 win from #2 Guy Davidson '16 (photo insert upper right), #3 Mike DeLalio '15 and #8 Chris Hart '17. Davidson was most impressive with his 11-3, 11-3, 11-2 triumph. DeLalio surrendered 23 points while Hart yielded 25. Giving Wesleyan a much-needed 3-2 win at #9 was Alex Kamisher '17 as he took a solid 11-4 decision in the fifth and deciding game. But it came down to Nassikas at #7, who won the first and third games with relative ease, 11-5 and 11-3, but dropped games two (6-11) and four (9-11). The match came down to his fifth game and he came through with an 11-7 victory to give Wesleyan, ranked 16th nationally, the team triumph. Bowdoin is ranked 21st nationally.
Ahead for the Cardinals is a four-match weekend during the Pioneer Valley Invitational. The first match is against #11 Columbia Fri., Jan. 17 at Amherst. On Sat., Jan. 18, the squad has a pair of matches at Mount Holyoke, facing #25 Stanford and #6 F&M. Weekend matches conclude Sun., Jan. 19 at Amherst with a lone match against NESCAC rival Colby, ranked 26th.
