Matt Hertgen '15 Provides the Offense, Adam Purdy '13 Chalks up Another Shutout in 1-0 Win over Middlebury

Matt Hertgen '15 (#3, photo by Peter Stein '84)  scored his first goal of the season and the only goal of the contest, leading Wesleyan to a 1-0 victory over visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury Sat., Sept. 29.  This victory avenged a 3-2 loss to Middlebury in the first round of the NESCAC tournament last year.  Hertgen's goal, in the 35th minute, followed a perfectly executed cross from Noah Schlesinger '13 from the left side of the field.  Hertgen headed the ball into the left side of the net.

Goalie Adam Purdy '13 came up with three saves on the day and achieved his fifth shutout of the season, sixth overall for Wesleyan in eight outings, and the 29th of his Wesleyan career, an ongoing Wesleyan record.  Wesleyan held an 11-7 edge in total shots on the day.

With the victory, Wesleyan's record improved to 5-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NESCAC.  The Cardinals continue their season Sat., Oct. 6, going on the road to face NESCAC opponent Bates.  It will be a back-to-back NESCAC Maine weekend as Wesleyan then moves on to Colby Sun., Oct. 7.
